Vizcaya

It is the most densely populated territory in the Basque Country and this demographic agglomeration is located around Bilbao, the capital, which with the creation of new infrastructures and the so-called “Guggenheim effect” has become a plural, active, cosmopolitan and welcoming city, which has managed to conserve the charm of its old corners.

The inland mountains, with mythical peaks such as Anboto and Gorbeia, shrouded in legend, reach down to the sea, creating a rugged coastline dotted with sandy beaches and charming fishing ports.

Bilbao

“The city of the Guggenheim”, we could also call this destination in the Basque Country, because since this original museum was built in 1997, Bilbao has been transformed forever. In fact, it now stands out for its ground-breaking structures created by prestigious architects and is an international benchmark of modernity

Although what gives it its unique character is the combination of the avant-garde with the traditional flavour of its old town, full of charming streets and bars with bars full of pintxos that show that gastronomy is lived with passion here. All this has earned Bilbao a place of honour in the lists of the most interesting cities in Spain.

Basque Cuisine

Basque cuisine has international prestige thanks to the quality of its raw materials and the skill of its chefs, both traditional and imaginative. It must be said that some of the most renowned restaurants in Spain are located in San Sebastian. Recipes made with garden produce, fish and seafood should always be accompanied by Guetaria chacolí/Guetariako Txakolina, with its own Designation of Origin.

Nature

Cultural and gastronomic Bilbao is also a green city with parks such as Doña Casilda de Iturrizar and surrounded by hills (take the Artxanda funicular, a classic way to see Bilbao from above). Its estuary is the other great symbol of Bilbao’s regeneration. In fact, you can see people paddle surfing or rowing in it, or take a boat trip to the famous Portugalete Suspension Bridge, declared a World Heritage Site, and the beaches and spectacular cliffs of Getxo are just over half an hour away by metro.
