Ávila

The unmistakable symbol of Ávila is its city wall. It can be seen from a distance and makes the city one of the best-preserved walled enclosures in Europe.

Inside, you will find a World Heritage City with cobbled streets, a medieval image, interesting churches, tasty gastronomy and a peaceful atmosphere that will help you to disconnect.

The Iconic Wall

The iconic wall of Ávila can be visited with a route of 1700 metres. Its views of the cathedral, the Plaza del Mercado Grande and the surrounding area of the city are well worth the climb. This cathedral is considered the first Gothic cathedral in Spain and is attached to the wall because it was also designed as a fortress.

The walled enclosure has medieval origins. The wall served to control the entry of foodstuffs, the passage of goods, and to isolate the city from possible plagues and epidemics, in addition to its defensive function.

Its layout is in the shape of an irregular rectangle and it is fortified with towers and cubes crowned with battlements. It has nine gates leading into the city, the most spectacular of which is the Alcázar. It was declared a National Monument in 1884.

A Bit of History

The Royal Monastery of Santo Tomás, the Basilica of San Vicente and the Basilica of San Pedro are also interesting religious sites. To learn more about mysticism and its characters in Ávila, we recommend you visit the Centro de Interpretación de la Mística (Mysticism Interpretation Centre).

A Peaceful and Unique City

Ávila is a peaceful city that invites you to enjoy the weather in peace and quiet. For example, the sunset from the Cuatro Postes viewpoint. It is outside the city walls and, if you go there after dark, you will discover the view of the wall illuminated in the darkness.
