The 9th edition of ECELE took place in Salamanca from November 25 to 27. This meeting, organized by FEDELE in collaboration with Turespaña, Salamanca City of Spanish and the Junta de Castilla y León, was attended by a hundred attendees, including 45 representatives from 32 FEDELE schools and more than 40 academic directors/teachers who teach Spanish in Brazil, Belgium, China, Denmark, the United States, India, the Netherlands, Japan, Norway, Poland, Italy, Turkey, Russia and Sweden.
The main objective of this meeting is to show the academic offer of Immersion Courses of Spanish as a Foreign Language to teachers and heads of centers where Spanish is taught throughout the world.
The program of the event is based on the innovative social networking format that offers cultural, touristic and gastronomic activities that will allow participants to know the highlights of the offer in cultural and linguistic immersion programs while enjoying emblematic places of Salamanca.
The Tourism councilman, Lopez Revuelta, has indicated that ‘for Salamanca, City of Spanish, this meeting is the best showcase for us to be seeing and the best speaker to be heard’. It is, he pointed out, ‘an opportunity for all teaching professionals who attend, know first-hand our city, our quality offer and the ideal conditions for learning Spanish.’
Salamanca has hosted this event again, for the third time. This meeting has been held so far in destinations such as Valencia, Cadiz, Madrid, Seville and Málaga.
Under the Salamanca City of Spanish brand, more than fifteen promotional actions of an international nature have been carried out in 2018, organized by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Castilla y León Regional Government, within the Plan del Español 2016-2018, and consisting, for the most part, of training workshops for Spanish teachers. Likewise, linguistic tourism has been promoted in the city, through actions that Salamanca City of Spanish brand, has been carrying out, independently, and promoting the suitability of our city to both teachers and students.
FEDELE is the Spanish Federation of Associations of Spanish Schools as a Foreign Language, and currently has 97 schools spread throughout the national territory. All FEDELE centers are accredited centers by Instituto Cervantes for the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language.
Up to 577 million people speak Spanish in the world and 21.2 million more study it as a foreign language. Idiomatic tourism, which generates more than 2,000 million euros per year, has a gigantic growth potential. Spanish in the world does not stop growing. 7.8% of the world’s population uses it, according to the Instituto Cervantes, which estimates an increase of the total figure to 754 million speakers by mid-century.
Around 200,000 of these students choose Spain as a destination for a cultural stay and linguistic immersion, registering an average stay of almost three weeks and an expenditure of around 2,500 euros for the teaching method, the teaching material and the teaching staff, as well like the climate, the cultural offer, the quality-price ratio and the way of life.
The professionals of teaching Spanish are the main opinion prescribers, because of their direct impact on the student when choosing a destination to study the language.
ECELE has already become a fundamental event for the promotion of the offer of teaching Spanish in our country, a conference that combines equally business opportunities with direct knowledge of destinations and centers, as well as their didactic and cultural proposals.
